Cherry Bomb is the 4th studio album from Tyler the Creator that was just released last week. Out of all the tracks on it, my favorite has to be “Smuckers.” Something notable from the start is that the single features both Kanye West and Lil Wayne. Having such two huge artists in addition to Tyler the Creator is a bit overwhelming at surface value, but the song works really well and they each bring their distinctive tone and voice to their respective verses. My favorite aspect of the song is how Lil Wayne and Tyler the Creator respond to each other in the second half of the song. It was a really cool feature of the track I was not expecting that brought some novelty while also giving the two artists more voice and expression in their lyrics. Artists generally speak to the listeners but here the artists are talking between themselves too and it brought a fresh attribute to this hip hop track.
The track is one of best produced tracks on the album and in Tyler’s entire discography too. It is cool to see fresh new beats from the artist. The song is played over a really interesting instrumental track which brings invigorating foundations for the rappers to do their thing. Lyrically, the song is full of clever puns that amuse any listener when caught. Some of my favorites are “That’s Tunechi, homie, master of ceremonies; I knock ’em down, domino effect, no pepperoni” and “Steaks are high well done and prime cut, eat up.” There are also more serious lines though like “Mom I made you a promise, it’s no more section 8; When we ate its the steaks, now our section is great.” Interesting, this last lyric is evident in his success since here two such huge and popular hip hop artists are being featured on his album’s single. Overall, I enjoyed the track and recommend you give it a listen too.
